Green Profile

Geoffrey Holton and Associates have been advocates and practitioners of sustainable design for over ten years. GHA has completed a number of projects which made careful use of recycled, renewable and salvaged materials.  These include the Berkeley Youth Alternatives propagation greenhouses and outdoor classroom, and the Fruitvale Avenue Homes in Oakland for East Bay Habitat. The latter received a 2004 Phoenix Award from the Environmental Protection Agency for community achievement in redevelopment of urban brownfield sites. Our staff includes three Certified Green Building Professionals.

Company Description

We are a small Oakland, CA architecture firm with a diverse portfolio that includes single and multi-family residential design, retail and commercial interiors, and institutional projects.  We emphasize careful understanding of site and context, comprehensive attention to sustainability and green design, as well as knowledge of and respect for construction methods and trades.  We strive to make works of functional beauty which express the unique character of our clients and their programs.

We approach every project with sustainable practices in the forefront of our thinking. Within the constraints and opportunities of each project we optimize daylighting, natural ventilation, energy perfomance, comfort, and long-term affordability. We also provide detailing and material specification with the goal of employing natural resources judiciously, using local and renewable resources whenever possible.

In this context we approach both new and existing buildings from a “whole-systems” perspective. We often look for opportunities to improve energy performance and livability beyond the boundaries of a specific remodel or addition, for our client’s immediate and long-term benefit.
