Koffka Phakos Design has had a sustainable approach to architecture since our founding in 2002. In one notable project, we designed an addition to the 1940s home of a family of artists. A new tower inserted into the courtyard affords views across the Sunset Park neighborhood while capturing ocean breezes and eliminating the need for air conditioning. Demolition was kept to a minimum and construction waste was recycled. Principals Cynthia Phakos and Adrian Koffka are both LEED Accredited Professionals. Cynthia Phakos was a recent contributor to GreenHomeGuide’s Ask A Pro column.

Sustainability is both a goal and practice in every project that we undertake—whether integrating green building products, efficient energy systems, or passive solar design. Our design for a dive resort on an atoll located 22 miles off the mainland in Belize required all buildings to be self sustaining. The cabanas, restaurant, dive shop and staff quarters include PV solar panels with battery banks to supply and store power, rain water collection, and natural cooling through convection from the water below the buildings.
Greg Upwall is a member of the USGBC’s Emerging Green Builders and regularly attends green building events organized by the USGBC, the Pacific Energy Center, and the AIA.
