Coconut palm lumber is a secondary harvest or by-product of the coconut harvesting industry. When coconut palms are older and no longer productive, they are typically burned and tilled back into the soil, creating a carbon-rich soil, but also emitting global warming gasses to the atmosphere. Manufacture of flooring from the exterior section of the tree takes advantage of the entire plant so that there is reduced waste and combustion. Coconut palms are harvested and manufactured in Southeast Asia (Indonesia), so transportation embodied energy is high (though sea transportation is more energy efficient than other forms of transport). Entire product, all three plies, is made from palm lumber. Laminating adhesive is a cold-pressed formaldehyde-free adhesive.
