This cabinet maker has been educated about, used, and has ready access to green materials, such as wheatboard, ArmorCore EQ and Medite II for cabinet bodies, FSC certified woods for doors and trim, and low VOC finishes. They are flexible and open and interested in taking on green work in the Monterey Bay area. As a small, local business, there is much less embodied energy in working with them and they are beholden to the community they live in.

Utter dedication and lack of fear in working with sustainable unique, but durable proven materials make this shop's products exemplary. Each job is customized for the client, so specific chemical sensitivities can be addressed by using alternative finishes, which also addresses indoor air quality, as does Skyside's use of low and no VOC materials. The company is looking at every aspect of being green, and by working with them if you live in the area, you'll help reduce embodied energy.

Urban Hardwoods produces custom residential and commercial furniture from locally harvested urban trees that would otherwise be used for lower-value products such as chipped mulch, firewood, or landfill. Because urban trees are given plenty of room to grow, they are often larger than forest trees and can have beautiful grain character that is not often available in commercially produced lumber. The choice of species is also much wider than what is normally available. Because this company works collaboratively with its cutomers and with various designers, they have assembled a portfolio of custom work that is aesthetically sophisticated, beautifully crafted, and wide-ranging in style. They can provide non-toxic finishes on their furniture if desired.

Using low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) materials in a home releases minimal pollutants and promotes healthy indoor spaces. Tile setting materials can have high Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) levels, which contribute to poor indoor air quality. D40 Duraflex Latex-Modified Mortar by Bostik, Inc contains no VOC's; by using a material like this one, you are not adding pollutants to the indoor air. This Latex-Modified mortar can be mixed with water only for installation, which even furthers its contribution to good indoor air quality.

Fireclay Tile makes beautiful glazed terra cotta tiles from clay and 50% post-consumer and post-industrial recycled materials, including granite dust, recycled brown and green glass bottles, and windowpanes. Using recycled materials keeps these materials out of landfills and extends the lifespan of their use, as well as reducing the amount of clay that is needed to make the product.
Tile is very inert and does not outgas any fumes that would contaminate indoor air. The glazes used on these tiles are lead-free.

This company, like many others, recycles all of its clay waste and glaze overspray into its clay bodies. Its Debris Series line of tiles, in addition to its post-industrial recycled content, also contains 50% post-consumer recycled materials, that include such things as recycled glass and granite dust waste from metal sandblasting operations.

Cork is a renewable resource. It is the bark of a tree, harvested in a way that leaves the tree standing to produce more cork. These tiles are 100% cork and can be purchased unfinished, so you can apply the finish of your choice.
