ABOUT US
Willem Maas founded GreenHomeGuide in San Francisco in 2004 to address the frustration and uncertainty he heard from people who wanted to green their homes but got bogged down trying to find reliable advice and sorting out products’ competing claims.
GreenHomeGuide helps close the gap between intentions and practical realities. We’re a trusted, community-based resource whose combination of tips, case studies, expert Q&A articles and regional directories of products and services helps millions of homeowners create homes that make them feel good.
As in an old-fashioned barn-raising, experts and novices come together on GreenHomeGuide. We cover the spectrum, from publishing the story of Los Angeles schoolteacher Angela Marino’s safe, healthy nursery to interviewing scientist Al Hodgson about the effects of paint on indoor air quality. Likewise, we take a community approach to our product directories, combining the recommendations of green architects, builders, designers and other building professionals with real-world reviews anyone can write—because the experts don’t know everything!
To encourage the broadest possible community participation, the content on GreenHomeGuide is free. Businesses that meet GreenHomeGuide’s publication standards advertise in our directories and sponsor our Know-How editorial topics.
A Vision For Better Homes
GreenHomeGuide believes we can improve the environment and make our homes safe, comfortable and rejuvenating at the same time. By choosing green alternatives to conventional building, cleaning, pest control and landscaping, we discover that we can have more, not less. Our homes can be better designed and more attractive; warmer and brighter in the winter and cooler in the summer. They can also offer us more of the well-being and comfort that we need and seek. And with better homes, we move one step closer to creating a better planet.
