Leon Alevantis, California Department of Health Services
Leon Alevantis is Senior Mechanical Engineer for the State of California’s Department of Health Services. Until October 2004, he was Deputy Chief and Principal Investigator, Indoor Air Quality Section for the Department of Health Services. In that role he managed large-scale research projects on the effect of ventilation on indoor air quality in non-industrial buildings. He coordinated the State’s efforts to incorporate building material selection criteria and methods and other indoor air quality-related measures in sustainable construction. He was principal investigator of an ongoing, eighteen-month research study to examine the indoor air quality of five State sustainable buildings in Sacramento (Capitol Area East End Complex). And he was principal investigator of a twenty four-month research study to measure emissions from numerous building materials with high-recycled content and to compare these emissions to their virgin or low-recycled content counterparts.
Kirsten Ritchie, Gensler
Kirsten Ritchie, P.E, is Director of Sustainable Design with Gensler. An innovative problem-solver sought by clients to address emerging environmental and sustainability topics within the context of competitive advantage, Kirsten has managed the SCS Environmental Claims Certification Program. She is the Chair of ASTM Task Group on Environmentally Preferable Products, serves on the Technical Advisory Board for Collaborative for High Performance Schools, and is a board member with International Design Center for the Environment.
Wayne Trusty, Athena Sustainable Materials Institute
Wayne Trusty is President of the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute and its U.S. affiliate, Athena Institute International. He is currently a Vice Chair of the Board of the Canada Green Building Council, and a member of the boards of the International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment and the Green Building Initiative. He is also past chairman of an international committee examining the use of Life Cycle Assessment with regard to building materials and products, and serves on a number of green building committees of the U.S. Green Building Council and other organizations. Mr. Trusty has appeared as a speaker on sustainable building and Life Cycle Assessment in various international forums, is author of a large number of articles on sustainable building, and recently served as a member of a U.S. Academy of Sciences committee on materials flow accounting.
