Personal Profile
I grew up in the South in a typical brick-veneered southern home with no air-conditioning and no shade trees on the west side where my bedroom was located. The 4” brick walls held the daytime heat for hours, so even with a fan it was often too hot to sleep until late at night. It came as a great surprise, then, when spending a summer in a humid river valley in the Middle East during my undergraduate years, I found other un-air-conditioned buildings that were comfortably cool even when daytime temperatures reached 110, much higher than the mid-to-high 90’s that I experienced as a child in my family home. This contrast in building performance led to my focus on the design of climate-responsive buildings during architecture school. Fast forward a decade or so to the rapid growth of the environmental movement into building design and a stint as a professor at UC Berkeley during the 1990’s. There I conducted research on the environmental impacts and performance of building materials. Now, as an architect, I not only continue that research but also incorporate the results into my designs for my clients.
