Green building for me seems to be an outgrowth of my interest in social justice coupled with architecture. I was born in a Latin American country where the desire for shelter for the major portion of the population was an unmet fundamental need. In the small villages I visited outside of the capital, people built homes made of regional materials using skills that had been passed down from generations. Their methods were climate responsive and the materials, though often crude, were locally produced from largely renewable sources. The irony and injustice was, of course, that sustainable building was used by the people in poverty and concomitantly, in order to shift a separate portion of society away from this sustainable way of building, massive environmental degradation was taking place.
