Sustainability is both a goal and practice in every project that we undertake—whether integrating green building products, efficient energy systems, or passive solar design. Our design for a dive resort on an atoll located 22 miles off the mainland in Belize required all buildings to be self sustaining. The cabanas, restaurant, dive shop and staff quarters include PV solar panels with battery banks to supply and store power, rain water collection, and natural cooling through convection from the water below the buildings.

Our first “green” project was green by default: an old farmhouse in Texas renovated and extended so as to be “at harmony with the land around” and using local and appropriate materials. A similar approach was taken for a house on Long Island. In 1998 I did not think to call this green, though it qualifies today. Now, we are in the process of designing and developing a 150-acre sustainable mixed-use development on the same family land. Now, we have been asked to collaborate on the design of large-scale multi-family “green” projects with large established “green” firms such as FX Fowle and HOK.

Since 2004, we have completed ten green home projects. In one key project, we designed a spa for pregnant women with environmentally friendly materials such as an FSC-certified veneer reception desk with compressed sunflower seed counter. The aesthetic and material choices were sensitive to organic, natural forms and the precious process of nurturing a baby, starting with the mother. We are a certified green business, working toward our LEED certifications, and green building certifications with USGBC. We are a member of Coop America and as the owner, I am a member of the Environmental Forum of Marin. I have authored two books on eco-friendly design and living, The Healthy Home Workbook, and Organic Baby, both published by Chronicle Books.
